The Firefighters’ Scholarship is established for firefighters and comcen staff that would like the opportunity to study overseas, research world’s best practice or undertake a project that will benefit the Fire Service.
The project or study programme must be linked to the Fire Service’s strategic plan, and may cover topics such as:
• Occupational health and safety
• Fire science
• Urban search and rescue
• Emergency preparedness including international and inter-agency cooperation
• Prevention and community education
• The application of technology
• Industrial relations and management.
The Firefighters’ Scholarship aims to offer candidates a unique professional and personal development
opportunity that may be carried out in New Zealand or overseas.

Who can apply?
The Firefighters’ Scholarship is open to:
• Career firefighters and officers, up to and including senior station officers, with a minimum of five years total service in the New Zealand Fire Service; and

• Communication centre communicators, including senior communicators and shift managers, with a minimum of five years total service in the New Zealand Fire Service.

How much is it worth?
The successful recipient or recipients will be awarded a grant of up to $20,000 to fund international or domestic travel, accommodation and/or course fees for up to six weeks.

How to apply
Applications for the Firefighters’ Scholarship will be assessed against the following criteria:
1. Relevance of the application in relation to the Fire Service strategic plan and key objectives.

2. The potential to apply the results and outcomes of your study programme to benefit the Fire Service.

3. The extent to which the study programme or project will progress the candidate’s professional development and career.


Guidelines
All applications for the Firefighters’ Scholarship must be made on the standard form attached, and include:
• a full costing of the proposal including study fees, itinerary, travel and accommodation budget;
• a letter of support from your chief fire officer or manager; and
• a current c.v.

Reporting
The successful recipient must write up and present a full report on their findings or research within six months of completing their studies.

Selection Committee
The successful recipient or recipients of the Firefighters’ Scholarship will be chosen by a panel comprising:
• a Commission member;
• a representative of the Chief Executive
• a representative from the New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union;
• a representative from the New Zealand Fire Service Superannuation Scheme; and
• a representative from the New Zealand Firefighters’ Welfare Society.

The Firefighters’ Scholarship is supported by the Associated Agencies, comprising the:
New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union, New Zealand Fire Service Superannuation Scheme, New Zealand Firefighters’ Welfare Society, New Zealand Firefighters’ Credit Union, Christchurch Emergency Services Credit Union, New Zealand Chief and Deputy Chief Fire Officers’ Society and the New Zealand Fire Service Sports Council.
